What do we believe about student learning? About supporting teachers?
What do we believe about school library programs?

RETHINKING..
REVISIONING…
TRANSFORMING…

A National Symposium to begin the discussion…

What is TM Canada?
Treasure Mountain Canada is a participatory experience designed to aggregate and highlight relevant Canadian research and scholarly discussion on the role school libraries could play in educational reforms and transformations – and it is a think tank to define the role of the school library in elementary and secondary education in Canada.

•	Research symposium
•	Semi-invitational
•	First Time in Canada
•	Planning wiki
•	Wednesday evening June 2nd, all day Thursday June 3rd
•	University of Alberta, Edmonton
•	Moderator: Dr. Loertscher; with Facilitation Panel to be determined
•	Delegates: between 50 – 60, invited, each contributes in some way

Planning Facilitators:
•	Carol Koechlin, Library Program Consultant, Speaker, Author
•	Liz Kerr, School Library Advocate, Education Director, OLA
•	Cindy Matthews, CASL Councillor-at-large: Advocacy Portfolio, TDSB Instructional Leader
•	Ruth Hall, OSLA President, TDSB SS Teacher-Librarian
•	Linda Shantz-Keresztes, CASL President, Calgary Bd of Ed SS Teacher-Librarian

Historical Context:
•	The Treasure Mountain Research Retreat in the USA started in Utah in 1987
•	Held every second year; this year in Charlotte, North Carolina, November 4-5 marked the 15th retreat
•	Started and continued by Dr. David V. Loertscher, San Jose School of Information (largest in the world)
•	Dr. Loertscher will moderate the first Treasure Mountain Canada

Desired Outcomes:
•	Looking for richness of ideas; reframing the school library concept within 21st century learning
•	Aggregate and highlight relevant Canadian research and scholarly works in a pre-symposium publication – used for prereading
•	Address the “transformation of school libraries”, including
o	21st Century Learning Needs and Styles
o	Multiple Literacies
o	The role of reading for pleasure; embedding reading into lifestyle
o	Guided Inquiry
o	Interdisciplinary Studies
o	School Library to Learning Commons
o	School Libraries Essential to Student Success (Achievement) – yes or no?
•	Aggregate school library “direction documents” into the publication (Ontario and Alberta have new ones)
•	Chronicle the teacher-librarian preparation programs in the various provinces
•	Begin to build a national vision of the school library embedded in 21st Century education reforms
