The focus of the event is to explore the transformation of school libraries in Canada to meet the needs of 21st century schools and learners. TM Canada will be initiated with an early dinner and speaker on Tuesday evening followed by a full day think tank on Wednesday and we promise to wrap up the day in time for CLA opening events. We have started the search for papers to support our work. We need your assistance in assuring that teacher librarians and other educational leaders right across the country have an opportunity to add their voices, ideas and research for our study. We would be very pleased if you could help us reach as many as possible by posting the attached Call for Papers to your district list serves. We would be very grateful if you could also target educational leaders and invite them to consider submitting a paper. Please inform Carol Koechlin koechlin at sympatico.ca of prospective writers and request that finished papers be sent directly to her. Attached you will find the call for papers invitation and a short specifications checklist. Deadline for submission of papers is March 12, 2010. Papers will be published for attendees at the symposium. All papers that have permission by the author will be posted on the TM Canada Wiki. It will take everyone engaged in school library programs in Canada to build momentum for transformations that best meet the needs of schools and learners today. The school library equips students with life-long learning skills and develops the imagination, enabling them to live as responsible citizens. This is a powerful vision for school libraries, but in too many schools in Canada, library programs remain marginal to K-12 education. Relevant Canadian scholarly study and grassroots research is needed to give direction and ensure the best school library programs for all students. An ad hoc committee, supported by CASL (Canadian School Library Association) and the Provincial School Library Associations, has come together to create Treasure Mountain Canada, patterned after the Treasure Mountain Retreats held in the United States since 1982 under the direction of Dr. David Loertscher. Treasure Mountain Canada is a participatory learning experience designed to aggregate and highlight relevant Canadian research and discussion on the role school libraries could play in educational reforms and transformations. The first symposium will be held on June 1-2, 2010 in Edmonton, Alberta just prior to the Canadian Library Association Conference. The focus of the symposium will be ?Transforming Canadian School Libraries to Meet the Needs of 21st Century Learners?. The TM Canada Planning Committee is pleased to extend an invitation for papers for our first publication, which will be one of the essential resources for the symposium. Papers related to the following areas would be highly useful: the needs of learners, multiple literacies (media, digital, information, reading, etc.), interdisciplinary learning, social networking/web 2.0, collaboration, inquiry-based learning, self-assessment, learning spaces/commons, etc. Action research, case studies, formal research studies and research-based writing are all possible formats. We recognize the outstanding contributions so many have made to teaching and learning in Canada and we value every voice added to our work at TM Canada. For specific requirements for papers please refer to the attached checklist. We need papers by March 12, 2010. We thank you for your consideration and look forward to hearing from you in the near future. Please let us know if you plan to submit a paper. If you have any questions or wish to discuss this initiative further please contact Carol Koechlin by email koechlin at sympatico.ca or by phone 416 751 0889. Checklist for TM Canada papers ? Approximately 1500-3000 words in length ? Electronic MS Word document - Arial 12 point ? Single spaced and visuals (e.g. charts and graphs) embedded ? References in any standard format ? Short biography of writer, about 200 words plus a digital photo would be appreciated ? Permissions if previously published ? Permission to publish your paper in PDF on TM Canada Wiki ? Papers are needed by March 12, 2010 Note: Copyright to remain with the writer Questions about submissions should be directed to Carol Koechlin koechlin at sympatico.ca Publication Editor - Professor David V. Overall, the MSLA executive was pleased with the results of the survey although there was room for improvement. To help you navigate the site more efficiently, we have added a tab for "Archives" and a "Search" feature. To encourage members to become involved in the discussion forum, members can now subscribe to the forum. By subscribing, every time a new discussion thread is posted, you will be notified via email. To subscribe, after logging in (username = first name initial + last name; password = msla), go to "Subscription Options" half way down the page on the left side. Where it says "Email all new posts", click the word "toggle" and the "no" will be changed to "yes." If you have any questions for members, comments or ideas to share, don't hesitate to use this forum. It's your way of connecting with your provincial school library community. Since the report on the website questionnaire was written for the journal, it has been discovered that the website cannot be used with an RSS aggregator. Therefore, when significant changes are made to the site, we will contact you through email. Our latest edition to the MSLA website is a application form in both French and English for the Winnipeg Public Library 2010 Language and Literacy Grant. To assist community groups in Winnipeg in developing language and literacy initiatives in partnership with one or more Winnipeg Public Library branches, the Winnipeg Public Library Board's Community Outreach Committee has committed $3,000 for 2010. There will be a maximum of three grants of $1,000 each awarded. You'll find the form linked on the Professional Development page. As you can see from the steering committee, they are requesting that this information and opportunities for joining a working group be passed along to other possibly interested folks. You can also visit their site to view the material presented at the fall Summit. News from the TD National Reading Summit Happy New Year from the steering committee of the TD National Reading Summit! Thanks to all who made the conference in November so energizing, thought provoking, and enjoyable. Over two days, speakers from Canada and around the world shared their research and experience in developing reading promotion programs and plans for people of all ages. We hope these case studies serve as inspiration for our own national reading plan (or plans). If you were unable to attend the summit, or did but want to review the material presented, visit www.nationalreadingsummit.ca. Video, slides and transcripts will be posted in the coming weeks. A few presentations are already available for review. Those of you who attended the summit know that the room was buzzing with ideas about how a reading culture in Canada can be fostered. The final afternoon was a highlight. Delegates brought their wish lists for a national reading plan to the floor, and these will serve as the foundation on which to build a strategy. Six working groups will begin to tackle this task. They will survey existing Canadian and international reading programs, consider best practice guidelines, and develop policy recommendations to bring to the next summit, which is scheduled for January 20-21, 2011. These recommendations will inform a strategy as the reading campaign moves into its final year. The areas to consider are many. To begin, groups will be formed around the following areas: (1) Babies/pre-school children (ages 0-5) --Public health/medical professionals (i.e. pediatricians) --Public libraries --School readiness (2) School aged children (ages 5-13) --Boys --School libraries --Teacher training --Librarian training --Public libraries (3) High school/university (ages 13-25) --Boys --Curriculum --Teacher training --Public libraries (4) First Nations --All ages --Public/school libraries --Bookstores/chains (5) New Canadians --All ages --Language training --Public/school libraries --Bookstores/chains (6) Equity/Access --Literacy training --Poverty --Urban/rural --Group homes --Prisons --Public/school libraries --Bookstores/chains The subtopics listed here are suggestions as to what working groups might choose to examine; each working group will push forward in the way it deems appropriate. Volunteer researchers will be available to help groups collect data and information if needed, and a project manager will be hired in the next few weeks to coordinate their activities. Groups of 12-15 members will be co-chaired by stakeholders and members of the steering committee, and will meet by teleconference two or three times as you develop your ideas and then as needed throughout the next year. This is where you come in. A wealth of knowledge and expertise exists in all parts of the country, and we hope you'll consider joining a working group. All are encouraged to volunteer; please share this letter with any colleagues who may wish to get involved. If you are interested, please send your first and second working group choice to info at nationalreadingsummit.ca by Friday, January 29, 2010. We will try to accommodate everyone's first choice, but to ensure all regions and constituency groups are represented, some may be assigned to their second choice. Stay tuned for more news in February. We look forward to working with you over the next year, and to creating a vibrant Canadian reading culture. Sincerely yours, Patsy Aldana Rick Wilks Co-chairs, TD National Reading Summit
